Dead trees and Bad Sidewalks Cause Problems

About a year ago I saw a lady using the fence around the Harding/Rayen campus area to pull herself up. She had fallen on the uneven sidewalk and was dirty from trying to use the fence to pull herself up. At the time, I didn’t know she was recently released from intensive care at the hospital and had moved into an apartment across the street from me.

I stopped to ask her if she needed help and wondered if she was drunk or high on something. When she approached my car, I saw a look of desperation in her eyes. My first thought was to take off. But I didn’t. She told me she was walking to the drug store. In her weakened and confused condition, she never would have made it because she was going in the wrong direction. Yes. I did take her to the drug store and waited to take her home. Which was fortunate for her because she could not remember where she lived. Only after she called her daughter did I learned that she lived directly across the street from me. Within a couple of weeks, I learned that this new neighbor died from previous problems.

Daily children and parents experience sidewalk problems on their way to school. Pictured are some of the hazarded sidewalks. Also pictured are some of the dead and dangerous trees in the Harding Elementary School area.
